Milan born Italian DJ/producer stalwart Benny Benassi – real name Marco Benassi – is widely regarded as one of the most charming, down to earth, internationally respected and treasured artists in the music industry. With over a decade to his illustrious career already, the chart-topping megastar has wholly managed to capture the hearts of multiple generations of EDM fans across the world with his flawless trademark tech/electro/house infused sounds and charismatic performance flair. Whether he’s behind the booth or in the studio, there’s never a dull moment when Benny’s around and fortunately for us, he’s showing no signs of slowing down whatsoever. Let’s indulge in a little bit of history di Benassi…

Obviously no account of Mr Benassi’s star-spangled career could pass without special mention of the international hit single that was ‘Satisfaction’. Unleashed on the world back in 2002, this globally celebrated record catapulted Benny from a once humble dance act into a world-famous artist almost overnight. Masterfully conjured up with first cousin and production partner in crime Alessandro ‘Alle’ Benassi (the pair openly work together on all of Benny’s musical output to this day) the record saw huge success especially in Europe, as it shot to #1 in the Official Dance Chart in France for over four weeks, #2 in the Official UK Top 40 singles chart and #2 in the Official Dance Chart in Germany to name but a few. His ensuing debut solo album ‘Hypnotica’ naturally followed suit, reaching Top 20 status in the Official Album Sales Chart in France and remaining there for over a month, peaking at #5. The critically acclaimed LP was subsequently awarded the ‘European Border Breakers Award’ for racking up the most record sales for an Italian album outside of Italy.

2003 saw the irrepressible Benassi go on to win a whole host of accolades and noteworthy recognition. Bagging DJ Mag’s ‘Tune of the Year’, ‘Revelation of the Year’ in the Italian Dance Music Awards, ‘Dance Revelation of the Year’ in the Danish Music Awards – not forgetting his nomination for NRJ Radio’s International Revelation of the Year’ (France) – it started to become increasingly clear that Benny Benassi had arrived in a seriously big way.

Having hit #18 (highest new entry) in the DJ Mag Top 100 poll the previous year, 2005 then saw Benny release his second studio album ‘Phobia’ – another titanic ‘Benassi Bros’ collaboration that instantly hit the Top 20 of the French Album Sales Chart. With 2 albums and some exceptional groundwork already in place, Benny then used the latter part of the ‘noughties’ to further cement his spot as one of the most in-demand DJs in the industry. Headline performances at countless festivals around the globe (Ultra Music Festival, Coachella, Electric Daisy Carnival, Movement, UV Nation and Labour of Love to name just a few); a string of high-profile remixes and collaborations with the likes of Madonna, Kelis and David Bowie; a third artist album ‘Rock n Rave’ (2008); and a brand new radio show on Sirius XM’s Electric Area were just a handful of stellar achievements – all of which bore worthy testament to the might of this truly class act. Most noteworthy of all, however, was on 10th February 2008, when Benny was awarded one of the most coveted accolades in music – a Grammy, for his exceptional rework of Public Enemy’s monster track Bring the Noise. This official recognition, coupled with his steady stream of success and achievement from the past decade would soon grab the attention of the most eminent names in music, and take the Italian to previously unbeknownst heights.

Sure enough, in 2011 Benny Benassi hit the big time. Having teamed up with Kelis, Apl.de.ap and Jean-Baptsiste for the colossal ‘Spaceship’ single – the first to be taken from his 5th studio album ‘Electroman’ – Benny then went on to join forces with R&B megastar Chris Brown to produce one of the biggest crossover records of the year. Reaching the Top 10 in the Official Singles charts in the UK and numerous other territories around the world ‘Beautiful People’ shot the popular Italian maestro to undeniable international recognition.
Just a few months later came the partnership with star vocalist Gary Go that gave us ‘Cinema’. A chart-destroying EP of epic proportions, the original radio edit went Gold in the USA and Platinum in both Australia and Canada, with Skrillex’s thunderous remix occupying the iTunes US Dance Top 10 for over 6 months and swooping a Grammy for ‘Best Remixed Recording’ in the process. The successes continued to flood in as Benny soon received a call up from the queen of pop herself, Madonna. Released worldwide at the end of March 2012, Madonna’s controversially titled twelfth studio album ‘MDNA’ featured 3 tracks produced by Benny and Alle Benassi, including the single “Girl Gone Wild” – a true honour for the Italian cousins.

Oggi (2005), dopo il successo di 'Satisfaction' che ha scalato la maggior parte delle classifiche mondiali, come sentite i vostri ruoli in area musicale .... vi sentite piu' musicisti, compositori, engineers, remixers, DJs .. o che altro?
Alle : un artigiano
Benny : Un DJ selezionatore

Parlateci del vostro nuovo album 'Phobia' dalla concezione, alla scelta dei collaboratori, alla realizzazione .
Alle : abbiamo fatto tanti provini e poi abbiamo prodotto quelli che piacevano di più
Benny : ho ascoltato tanti provini e ho accettato di produrre quelli che piacevano di più.

In quanto tempo lo avete realizzato ?
Alle : la produzione ci ha preso circa un mese... ma avevamo già scritto vari brani
Benny : la realizzazione finale dei brani è stata naturalmente di Alle e più o meno ci ha messo un mese...molte melodie le avevamo già scritte su altre basi in collaborazione con le nostre cantanti, Dhany, Sandy, Naan (new entry) e Paul French, che hanno anche interpretato i brani.

Sempre parlando di 'Phobia' , siete soddisfatti del lavoro 'finito' o, come spesso capita, riascoltandolo stampato, c'e qualcosa che avreste voluto suonasse diversamente, o qualcosa nei mixaggi, nell'arrangiamento etc. che avreste voluto aver fatto diversamente?
Alle : beh si tenta sempre di fare del proprio meglio ...poi ti accorgi di qualche cosa che poteva essere diverso o di qualche piccola dimenticanza ... tipo un piattino lì o un clappettino là ... ma di solito portano fortuna
Benny : riascoltando alcuni brani mi accorgo di aver litigato poco con mio cugino. E qualcosa ci è sfuggito, forse per quanto riguarda le stesure, faremo meglio durante la preparazione dei singoli mix.

Qual'e' il brano contenuto in "Phobia" che maggiormente vi soddifa?
Alle : probabilmente tutti hanno qualcosa di simpatico e allo stesso modo tutti mancano di qualcosa ma se devo dire la mia forse preferisco 'light' o 'rocket in the sky' per l'atomsfera in generale
Benny : impazzisco per l'atmosfera di 'rocket in the sky', e anche i club impazziscono. Però a essere sinceri, quelli che suonano un po' alla vecchia maniera 'benassi style' hanno una grande reazione sulla pista.

Avete un vostro studio di programmazione/registrazione?
Benny : No, io ho un mio studio per le compilation e per provare i miei DJ Set, ma tutta la nostra produzione viene curata all'interno della Off Limits, la struttura di Larry Pignagnoli.

Quali sono le macchine che adoperate in studio (computer, software, generatori di suono, campionatori, ....)?
E quali quelle live on stage (campionatori, CDplayers, turntables ...) ?
Alle : un bel Aple G5 nuovo fiammante con sopra il Apple Logic 7 e sotto il ProTools HD3... poi campionatori l' Emagic EXS 24 e il Virus che adesso si chiama Access Indigo...ha un sacco di suoni bellissimi e veramente cattivi... la Clavia NordLead
Benny : live on stage i piatti classici Technics, adoro il mixer Pioneer 600 per i suoi effetti e anche l'Allen Heath. CD player CDJ1000 Pioneer, in attesa dei nuovi DVDJ.

Quando cominciate a lavorare su un nuovo brano, da dove partite? Da una idea che avete gia' in testa, da qualche brano che vi ha ispirato etc... ? E come poi sviluppate il lavoro ?
Alle : non c'è una regola... si può partire da una melodia per poi rivestirla con un abitino simpatico perchè possa essere ballata... si può partire da un suono che ti ispira una parte ... si può partire da una base che ci fa ballare per poi metterci una melodia perchè possa essere cantata ... non c'è una regola
Benny : Io personalmente alle volte mi ispiro a vecchi brani di cui mi ricordo la reazione della gente sulla pista, ma giustamente non sempre le mie idee combaciano con le idee di Alle. Quindi dopo un po' di litigate ci accordiamo per partire da un suono o da un giro di accordi.

Alle, qual' e' il tuo background musicale ? Hai fatto studi classici ?
Alle : ho studiato clarinetto e jazz fra i conservatori di Reggio Emilia e Parma

Alle: quali musicisti ti hanno influenzato o ti influenzano maggiormente per quanto riguarda la composizione ?
Alle : beh mi piacciono quelle cose dove tutti fanno la stessa cosa ad altezze e durate diverse....ma non è facile farci un pezzo dance

Benny: quali artisti ti hanno influenzato e ti influenzano maggiormente nella realizzazione dei brani ?
Benny : Da buon DJ sono fan dei Daft Punk e dei Chemical Brothers. Adoro i remix e le atmosfere di Cicada e ultimamente mi piace molto ABE DUQUE.

Parlateci del prossimo progetto in cantiere.
Alle : si continua sempre a lavorare e ti accorgi che è diventato un progetto quando è finito
Benny : Stiamo continuando a fare ricerca, non possiamo ancora parlare di progetti....speriamo di poterlo fare presto

Quale sara' il vostro "stile futuro" ?
Alle : ah ..non lo so... bisogna sperimentare
Benny : Alle ha da poco cambiato il sistema proTools. Credo che questo ci aiuterà.

Che tipo di direzione prendera' la vostra carriera in futuro?
Alle : io vorrei fare il cuoco...prima o poi
Benny : io vorrei far l'aiuto cuoco prima o poi (credi di liberarti facilmente di un DJ?)... Per ora però sono più bravo io a cucinare, ma sulla scelta dei vini, Alle dice la sua.

Secondo voi quale sara' la musica di tendenza nel prossimo futuro ?
Alle : spero la musica rinascimentale ma è più facile che siano tedeschi... Berlino o giù di lì
Benny : se sapessi prevedere quello che succederà in futuro, lo direi ad Alle in un orecchio. Purtroppo non ho la sfera magica, anche se comincio ad essere fan della Germania del Nord..

Benny: quali sono le citta' e i clubs in cui ti piacerebbe essere on stage e ancora non ti e' stato possibile essere?
Benny : Berlino. Ho partecipato all'ultima Love Parade 2 anni fa, ma non sono ancora riscito a fare uno dei tanti club elettronici che son nati in questa città.

Benny: clubs preferiti in cui hai gia' lavorato ?
Benny : Il Pacha di Ibiza, per l'atmosfera che Ibiza riesce a creare. Mi fa impazzire il Gallery a Londra, il MAD a Losanna. Il mese prossimo suonerò al Maffia di Reggio Emilia. Questo è uno dei club che amo.

E' meglio produrre o essere on stage?
Alle : è megliofare quello che fa divertire di più
Benny : dipende dai periodi. Essere on stage in questo momento per me è molto bello.

Il risultato che avete fin qui raggiunto e' sufficiente a farvi pensare 'la nostra carriera musicale e' stata un grande successo !' ?
Alle : abbiamo avuto un sacco di fortuna ....e un pò di artigianato.
Benny : abbiamo avuto tanta fortuna e forse qualche intuizione.

Ai lettori di Future Style che vorrebbero iniziare una carriera come DJ e/o come produttori che consigli potete dare ? Da dove dovrebbero partire e quale strada dovrebbero seguire ?
Alle : fare quello che gli piace cercando di essere originali
Benny : io sono partito da un negozio di dischi, per cominciare a capir come funzionava il mercato discografico. Poi naturalmente in discoteca.

Pensate che Internet e MP3 stiano influenzando il vostro lavoro positivamente o negativamente?
Alle : sono un cliente fisso di iTunes music store.
Benny : ho un sito internet con oltre 1000 contatti al giorno, e un ipod da 40 GB pieno, che mi accompagna sempre.

Pensate che i 'classici' e 'fisici' supporti musicali (CD, DVD etc.) abbiano ancora un futuro commerciale ?
Alle : beh credo che per alcuni generi musicali (musica colta in generale) la qualità dell'ascolto sia fondamentale, quindi probabilmente i vari supporti sopravviveranno...per i dj i vinili sono ancora importanti...per il resto vorrei avere un telefonino con 40 giga di HD
Benny : i DVD ancora per un po'. I vinili ormai solo per gli amanti o i DJ.

Qual'e' il migliore consiglio che avete ricevuto e che vi e' servito da quando lavorate insieme?
Alle : sperimentare cercando di essere originali.. ma riconoscibili
Benny : cercate di andare d'accordo (mia madre)

Alle : dipende... sai a natale ne escono di più... in ogni caso..non saprei quantificare in tempo...diciamo svariati vinili e circa 2 cd ogni tre giorni
Benny : non riesco a sentire tutti i giorni, ma almeno 3 giorni alla settimana ascolto quello che mi arriva.

Quale DJ o musicista vi piace attualmente ? E quale produttore ?
Alle : beh ce ne sono vari ma direi Agoria... e tra i produttori mi inchino anzi mi prostro ai piedi di Guy Sigsworth e Mike "Spike" Stent
Benny : I DJ sarebbero tantissimi, anche se non ho troppo tempo per ascoltarli. I produttori, ho già detto, Abe Duque

Benny: nella intervista che Future Style ti ha fatto nel 2003 alla domanda " I tre valori piu' importanti nella vita per Benny Benassi ?" hai risposto "Fatemi una domanda di riserva...". Oggi , 2005, ti riproponiamo la domada.

Benny : forse gli amici, perchè mi mancano molto durante i tour.

Alle: e per te quali sono i tre valori piu' importanti nella tua vita ?
Alle : uh...mmmhhh beh il massimo sarebbe riuscire a portare di la dal fiume lupo capra e cavolo tutti interi...ma non è facile e non puoi chiedere ad un bambino dell'asilo di risolvere un'equazione differenziale di quarto grado...

Benny and Alle Benassi biography 2005

Benny Benassi was born in Milan on 13 July 1967.
He works as a producer in collaboration with his cousin Alle Benassi, who has been a musician and arranger at Off Limits, in Reggio Emilia, Italy, the internationally successful production unit run by Larry Pignagnoli.

The first club hit was “I feel so fine” by KMC feat Dhany (N° 1 club charts UK) in 2001. This was followed by the BENNY BENASSI presents THE BIZ project, a ground-breaking mixtured of electro, techno and house dosed with minimalist flair.
The first single SATISFACTION, produced in 2002, made its presence felt in the main charts all over Europe in 2003. Some of the results:
- n° 2 in the Official Singles Sales Chart in UK
- over a month in the n° 1 spot in the Official Dance Chart in FRANCE
- top twenty Official Singles Sales Chart in FRANCE

The album HYPNOTICA stayed in the top 20 in the Official Album Sales Chart in FRANCE for over a month, having reached the TOP 5.

Benny and Alle then produced Benassi Bros, a project designed to shine the spotlight on the two Biz vocalists, Paul French and Violeta and other guest singers.
The track by Benassi Bros. feat. Sandy, "Illusion" and "Hit my heart" featuring Dhany were both monster top 20 sales charts hits in France and the album, PUMPHONIA, went gold in France.
Other hit singles taken from HYPNOTICA are "No matter what you do" and "Love is gonna save us"
Benny mixed SUBLIMINAL SESSIONS VI, for the famous New York label and, for the occasion, produced a track called "I want you to come" under the psuedonym BAT67. With this name he also remixed "Hot Tin Groove" by Rava and "Warman Whoreman" by Digitally Stoned People. He is the first European dj to have mixed a Subliminal Sessions compilation.

In 2003, Benny won a lot recognition
- number one in the Top 100 dance tracks on the Ministry of Sound Internet radio
- DJ MAG tune of the year in UK
- Revelation of the year – Italian Dance Music Awards
- Dance revelation of the year – Danish Music Award
- Nominated for international revelation of the year – NRJ Awards, France

In 2004,
- three nominations at Dancestar, Miami and won the best video award
- DjMag favourite DJ Poll Top 100: Benny is number 18, the highest new entry
- European Border Breakers Award for Hypnotica, the Italian album that sold most in Europe outside Italy

When Benny isn’t in the studio, he tours the world rocking clubs and events with his unstoppable energy.
His dj style is easy to describe…. it’s kinda electro, sort of house-tec, dirty and cool, sweaty and smooth….
